“The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.”

The Prophet and the Eclipse: Nineveh
As the storm raged around them, the prophet was thrown into the heaving ocean from the deck of the ship. He bobbed briefly to gasp for air and then sank fast into the waters. He spun around and around in the swirling sea, sinking deeper into darkness. As he sank, he remembered how he had fled from God.
Just days before, he had been told by the voice of the Lord, go warn the great city of Nineveh that God was going to destroy them. Nineveh was a metropolis of violence, immorality and idolatry. They were mortal enemies of the Israelites. Jonah did not want to warn them of anything. As far as he was concerned, destruction is what they deserved.
So, the prophet fled from God aboard a ship bound for the distant port of Tarshish. Once at sea, a violent storm had come upon them and threatened to destroy the ship. When the sailors aboard the ship realized the prophet was fleeing from his God, they became frightened. Jonah told them they must throw him overboard to save their lives. At first they resisted, but finally they complied. As soon as he hit the water, the storm ceased.
The Lord prepared a giant fish to swallow him. Gulp. In the belly of the fish. Was he dead? Maybe. Three days and nights in darkness. Was he between dimensions, between dreams?
Between heaven and the deep blue sea.
Finally he cried out in a prayer which ended:
“What I have vowed I will pay. Salvation belongs to the Lord.” Then the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah out on dry ground. -Jonah 2: 9-10
No man had ever lived through such a thing or ever would again. His mind was blown. His skin and hair bleached whiter than an albino. Perhaps astonished Assyrians saw the fish belch him out, and knew it was an act of God. Frightened and superstitious, they would lead him across the desert to Nineveh, nearly 200 miles from the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. They were fed by strangers who may very well have been angels. They found wells of water provided by the Creator of all things. What went through his mind and heart, no one knows.
Finally, he entered the great city. Word spread he had been spit from a fish. Jonah walked one day across Nineveh crying the message of God:
“Yet Forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” (Jonah 3: 4)
As he reached the center of the city beside the King’s palace, the Hebrew man grew a large crowd. His bizarre appearance gave him an air of otherworldly authority. Even officials from the King’s palace came there, along with the court magicians and astrologers and soldiers. They were drawn to his damning words in ways they could not comprehend, like their very souls were caught up in a pantomime of eternal significance. The crowd grew larger.
As he spoke, the people began to notice the light from the sun beginning to change. The palm trees began to cast strange shapes upon the ground. Someone cried out that the sun was being eaten alive.
Jonah repeated his same warning. He had already seen darkness and hell and separation from the light of God. Nothing could surprise him now.
The Assyrians were people who worshipped the sun. None of them had ever seen a solar eclipse before. Now the light from their god began to refract and dim everywhere they turned. The Queen, hearing word of the prophet’s arrival and seeing the crowd from the palace window, rushed to the scene surrounded by her eunuchs. As she arrived, the people bowed to her. Many were weeping hysterically. Jonah did not bow. He spoke again looking right at her.
“Thus says the Lord, Yet Forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown.”
In the lurid glow of impending eclipse, the bleached prophet stopped and gazed into the eyes of the Queen of Assyria. One of the Queen’s eunuchs lifted his spear as if to fling it at the prophet, but she signaled him to stop. As the prophet’s stare met hers, some unfathomable communication occurred from soul to soul.
The Queen turned towards the palace and saw the outline of the King far off standing on the tower. Just then, the moon completely eclipsed the sacred sun and darkness fell over Nineveh. Jonah went silent. The crowd fell to hushed prayer. The birds and dogs hid themselves.
For the first and last time in any of their lives, they could stare directly at the savage sun, now darkened and surrounded by a holy crown of blue and white light. It seemed the end of the world. It seemed the judgment of a true God, one that had total power over sun and moon. The Queen cried quietly and prayed in the sight of the people. For five minutes it remained like that. Jonah spoke one last time:
“Thus says the Lord, Yet Forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown.”
He turned and walked back towards the desert. As he stepped away, the sun began to reemerge from behind the moon, breaking the darkness. The Queen went back to the palace. Jonah left the city and sat upon a hill overlooking Nineveh to await its destruction.

The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh:
“By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone call urgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.”
When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened. -Jonah 3: 6-10
Obviously. I took liberties inserting this total solar eclipse narrative into the story of Jonah. It is “dramatization”, of course. But I, and many others, believe it probably happened like that.
For millennia, the Book of Jonah was a mystery. The storyline portrays a tremendous about-face repentance from a Pagan empire which is completely unseen anywhere in the rest of Scripture. Why had the pagan capital of Assyria repented so dramatically at the word of a lone (and reluctant) Hebrew prophet? Something big had to have happened. Something besides just a doomsayer stinking like a tuna can. What was so impressive about Jonah?
The explanation for their repentance is left out of the narrative by the scribes. Why? I think we were supposed to think about it right now. It turns out there was a total solar eclipse over Nineveh during the time Jonah lived and preached. That eclipse is almost certainly the reason Nineveh repented.
Jonah prophesied during the reign of King Jeroboam (786 to 746 BC) according to 2 Kings 14:25. It so happens that there was a total solar eclipse over the city of Nineveh in 762 BC. It was calculated in the 19th century by western scientists but was recorded in ancient chronicles as well.
t the top of the page is the NASA map of the Nineveh Eclipse. Nineveh would be located along the blue line just to the left of the star (the star is in Northern Iran in the center of the globe which signals maximum eclipse). Nineveh was situated very near modern day Mosul, in the far north of Iraq.
To sum up: Nineveh deserved judgment but avoided it by timely repentance. That is what I call The Nineveh Clause. By all appearances, judgment looms for our modern world. That impending judgment is written in eclipses. Perhaps mass repentance could save us. This possibility appears to be already written into the eclipse schedules themselves. What would that repentance look like? How much longer if we repent? A few years? A few decades? Who knows? Nineveh had forty days to turn it around. How long do we get?
Jesus mentions the “sign of Jonah” in two Gospels. “The sign” is understood to mean that Jonah was essentially or literally dead for three days which Jesus says explicitly in one of the Gospels. (Matt 16: 1-4). But now another “Sign of Jonah” comes to light, the sign of a timely total solar eclipse.
As it happens, Nineveh (near modern Mosul Iraq) was in the path of two extraordinary total solar eclipses in Aug 21 1914 (WWI Eclipse) and Aug 11 1999 (Last complete eclipse of Second Millennium). Now an overview of the Nineveh Clause, the eclipses which follow the Judgment Series.

Totality in Pyongyang, North Korea and northern metropolitan Tokyo. After this eclipse, there will not be another complete solar eclipse on earth until July 2037. The great Saros 145 continues its run of imperially significant eclipses.

First complete Christmas Eclipse since South Africa in 1954, and first Christmas Total Eclipse since 1666. Thin path of totality manages to straddle North and South Island. Yet another Christmas Eclipse manages to show up in 2057 in Antarctica.
