The Titanic Eclipse April 17 1912 - Saros 137 60 hours after the sinking of the Titanic on the night of April 14/15 1912, a solar eclipse occurs in the Atlantic, through Europe and deep into Russia. A great solar eclipse marking the most famous man-made disaster of all times, the legendary sinking of the Titanic, the largest ship ever launched, the symbol of modern technology, the “unsinkable". She was sent to a watery grave on her maiden voyage along with more than 1,500 people. Path goes just south of Southampton, England (90% coverage) where Titanic launched a week before. 35% coverage at the site of the disaster in Atlantic southeast of Newfoundland. 18% coverage at intended harbor of New York. Path cuts a foreboding shadow across Europe two years before World War One. Stripe of Totality divides metropolitan Paris. Larger path of annularity goes through France, Belgium, Germany, Baltics, and Russia.

Two extraordinary eclipses cross an extraordinary place at a pivotal moment in human history. These two eclipses frame the beginnings of the Vietnam and Korean wars. It is the only cross over southeast Asia in the last thousand years.
The May 9 1948 eclipse was the strongest non-total ring of fire of all time, featuring, get this, 99.999% totality. It split Korea in half two years before the war between North and South Korea.
The 1955 June 20 total eclipse was the longest solar eclipse of the millennium, at 7 minutes, 7 seconds. It crossed Vietnam and Cambodia the very year that the Vietnam War officially starts.
Intersection of these eclipses occurs on the Vietnam/Cambodia borders, between Phnom Penh and Saigon ( now Ho Chi Minh City).

Six solar eclipses intersect over Southeast Asia in 21 years, in probably the greatest known intersecting eclipse swarm in history. Meanwhile, in that region, a brutal cycle of violence is fueled by imperial struggles between Communist and Capitalist powers. War in Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Burma, Cambodia. Between 1945 and 1980, perhaps 15 to 20 million are murdered across the region.

856 Day Cross. The “You’re so Vain” Cross, with apex near Halifax, Nova Scotia. The only solar eclipse to be specifically commemorated in a popular song was the Jul 10 1972 total eclipse.
Carly Simon had a huge hit with “You’re so Vain”, which spent three weeks at number 1. It includes the lyric: ”You flew your Learjet up to Nova Scotia to see a Total Eclipse of the Sun”.
The 1970 eclipse was the last total to touch the eastern US eastern for 47 years. It was in Hepton Cross relation with the 1963 US eclipse four months before JFK association, but the apex was a few hundred miles out to sea.

In the space of 7 eclipse years (2422 days) two clusters occur over Africa. One (between 1973 and 1976 over the course of 1033 days) has an epicenter on the western edge of the nation of Mauritania, near capital of Nouakchott. The other (between 1976 and 1980 over 846 days) has an epicenter near the capital of Tanzania, Dar Es Salaam.
The 6-30-1973 and 2-16-1980 solar eclipses (Saros 136 and 130) are a matching Hepton Pair exactly seven eclipse years apart, both occurring on Saturday. Together they bookend the larger cluster. These two eclipses also cross each other, in the Indian Ocean several hundred miles east of Kenya.

Crosses Atlantic to Southern England, bisects France, goes over Germany--Hitler's hometowns of Branau Aum Inn and Munich are in totality for first time in centuries. Mozart's home of Strasbourg, Austria then to Romania, Hungary and across Turkey.
Six days later, on Aug 17 1999, the worst earthquake in Modern Turkish history devastates its western coast and kills perhaps 20,000 people, most in town of Izmit (96% totality). Eclipse continues over Iraq, bringing totality to Nineveh (Mosul) and bisects Iran, brings totality to Karachi, Pakistan. One of the greatest eclipses of the century finishes out the 20th century by crossing the entire nation of India, exiting in centerline of totality at Srikakulum, a sacred city for both Hindus and Buddhists, location of the Arasavalli Sun Temple --the “abode of the Sun god”.

2006 Mar 29 Total Eclipse (Saros 139) Totality begins directly over city of Natal, Brazil ("Nativity " in Portuguese. Crosses Atlantic to enter Africa at Acrra, Ghana 39 years almost to the day after Martin Luther King's historic visit there in March of 1957. King would be murdered at 39 years of age.
Path continues on across doomed nation of Libya, where it intersects the path of the eclipse of Oct 3 2005, which occurred 6 lunar months before. The path of totality goes over the Mediterranean before entering Turkey. 2009 Jul 22 Wuhan Totality (Saros 136) Ten years before the Pandemic begins and the world changes forever; The total eclipse of 2009 puts Wuhan, China, almost perfectly in the centerline of totality.
At 6 minutes and 39 seconds, the July 22 2009 Total solar eclipse is the longest of the 21st Century. It begins just west of India and crosses many important cities: totality in Surat, Indore, Jabalpur, Allahabad (City of God), Varanasi. Patni etc…Totality at the Taj Mahal. Totality over nearly the entire mysterious mountain kingdom of Bhutan 8 weeks before a major earthquake there. Path traverses Tibet (95% in Lhasa) and then heads to China. The eclipse goes over the great city of Shanghai, which becomes at that moment the most-populous city in the history of the world to experience a total eclipse (metro pop. 40 million). The path crosses mostly ocean for the next several thousand miles, before dying in the Marshall Islands, site of USA nuclear tests following World War Two, including the famous island atolls of Bikini and Eniwetok, where the US controlled until 1990's and bombed with some of the largest destructive weapons in the history of man-- are in totality. 2010 Jan 15 MLK Birthday Chongqing Cross Ring of Fire (Saros 141) The Martin Luther King Birthday Metonic on what would have been his 81st birthday. King visited Africa and India, both of which are in this eclipse. 177 days after the Great Wuhan Eclipse, eclipse begins in Cameroon, Africa and crosses the continent through Uganda (Annularity in Kampala), Kenya (Annularity in Nairobi. The annularity path crosses the home and birthplace of US President Barrack Obama's father Barrack Obama Sr. in the Rachuonyo District of Kenya, just as President Obama begins his second year in office.
Path heads across the Indian ocean to cross extreme southern India for India's second eclipse in 6 months, including annularity at The Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple of the Sun in Thiruvananthapuram. It is known as the world's richest temple, near where the lost city of Ophir was believed to be visited by Kings Solomon’s ships around 1000 BC. Eclipse bisects Myanmar (annularity in Mandalay) and then bisects China (second eclipse in 177 days) before ending just after China's extreme northeastern border at Rongcheng, eclipse remains on the Chinese side of the Yellow Sea stopping just short of the Korean border. 80% coverage in Wuhan. If overlaid with the path of the 2009 eclipse 177 days prior, an X is seen across the nation of China, with its epicenter west of Wuhan, and very near the ancient city of Chongqing- geographically, at 31,000 square miles, the largest city in the world. On the other side of the world, an earthquake hit Haiti 60 hours earlier, one of the deadliest disasters in the history of the western hemisphere, killing 200,000 people.
2010 Jul 11 Easter Island Total (Saros 146) Hey, it's the 7-11 Metonic. Let’s say you're an eclipse. Where would you want to go? Maybe you'd want to be the first total eclipse in 1400 years to cross Easter Island, one of the most mysterious and isolated places on planet earth, a tiny speck of land on a vast ocean with a tragic yet enduring history, the famous home of gigantic carved stone heads gazing off across the ocean's horizon. This solar eclipse travels almost entirely over open ocean before reaching Easter Island. Afterwards it travels to South America without making it to the other side. Manages to cross Patagonian city of El Calafete, and town of Esperanza ( "hope"), Argentina at sunset .
The Easter Island eclipse occurred precisely during the playing of the 2010 World Cup Soccer final between the Netherlands and Spain. The Dutch had been the first colonizers of Easter Island in the 1700's. Spain had asserted linguistic control, via Chile, in 1888. Easter Islanders speak Spanish. A soccer match between two extinct empires took place while a total eclipse crossed their most mysterious of conquests, the great watching heads of Easter Island. Spain won the match 1 -0.

Five of the six eclipses in this time frame are quite extraordinary and they occur in a row 177 days apart. Coming off two partials in 2025 and a nondescript Antarctica Ring of Fire in early 2026, the next five eclipses hit like a ton of bricks of meaning. They create a very unusual balanced triad with Spain in the crosshairs. Also, Australia begins its 15-year eclipse swarm in earnest, and an interesting Rio Slave Trade eclipse. Beautiful symmetric swirl is formed by the three colliding Spanish eclipses.
2026 Feb 17 Antarctica Ring of Fire (Saros 121) The second to last complete eclipse for Saros 121. Its last is scheduled for 2-28-2044. It began life in 944 and had its first complete eclipse in 1070.
2026 Aug 12 Spain/Reykjavik Total (Saros 126) First total eclipse in Spain for last 112 years. They last had a total eclipse in 1905. Spain's first of 3 complete eclipses in 18 months, two of them totals. 500 years after Spain began the African Slave Trade to the New World (1526). Eclipse occurs 128 years to the day of the peace treaty that ended the Spanish-American War on Aug 12 1898, basically ending the 600 year old Spanish Empire. The extraordinary path of this eclipse avoids almost all human populations, curling around the British Isles—91% coverage in London, 92% in Paris. The only other nation to experience totality besides Spain is Iceland. Amazingly that occurs only on the bare sliver of western coast that includes its capital of Reykjavik (whose metro area contains 60% of Iceland's population). Eclipse manages to enter Iberian Peninsula at just the right angle, without crossing the border of neighbors Britain, Portugal or France. For instance, the village of St. Jean de Luz in southern France has 99.7% coverage but no place in France has true totality. In Portugal, the village of Labiados in the extreme north experiences 99.99% coverage. A few square miles of apparently uninhabited Portuguese territory in the Pyrenees has totality but no established towns. Lisbon, Portugal has 95%.
Spain is another story. The eclipse bisects the northern half of the nation, bringing totality to a third of its land mass. There is totality in parts of metropolitan Madrid. Toledo has 99.4% Eclipse. Enters Spain at city of La Coruna ("crown”) and ends in the Mediterranean just past Spain's Balearic Islands.
